Exclamatory Sentence (आश्चर्यसूचक वाक्य) :-
“The Sentence which expresses some strong feeling of mind as sorrow, joy, praise or surprise is called the Exclamatory Sentence.”
(ऐसा वाक्य जो मन की तीव्र इच्छाओ जैसे – दुख, प्रसंता, प्रशंसा या आश्चर्य को प्रकट करता है, आश्चर्यसूचक वाक्य कहलाता है।)
Examples –
(i) Hurrah! India has won the match.
(ii) Bravo! You have done well.
(iii) Alas! My friend is no more.
(iv) What an idea!
(v) What a lovely book it is!
(vi) How dangerous the snake is!
Note – Interjection words – Hurrah!, Bravo!, Alas! व What a/an or How से क्रमशः joy, praise, sorrow व surprise का भाव स्पष्ट होता है।

यदि Direct Narration के R.S. में आया हुआ वाक्य कोई Exclamatory Sentence हो तो इसे Indirect Narration में बदलने के कुछ विशेष नियम इस प्रकार है –
Rule :-1 यदि R.S. में Bravo! शब्द का प्रयोग हुआ हो तो R.V. said या said to को exclaimed with praise या praised में change कर देते हैं।
Rule :- 2 यदि R.S. में Hurrah! शब्द का प्रयोग हुआ हो तो R.V. said को exclaimed with joy/ delight में change कर देते हैं।
Rule :- 3 यदि R.S. में Alas! शब्द का प्रयोग हुआ हो तो R.V. said को exclaimed with sorrow में change कर देते हैं।
Rule :- 4 यदि R.S. में Good Heaven! (हे भगवान) शब्द का प्रयोग हुआ हो तो R.V. said को exclaimed with surprise/regret (पश्चाताप) मेंchange कर देते हैं।
Rule :- 5 यदि R.S. का वाक्य what a/an से प्रारंभ होने वाला Exclamatory Sentence हो तो R.V. said को exclaimed या exclaimed with surprise में change कर देते हैं तथा what या how को very या great में change कर देते हैं।
Note :- यदि how या what a/an के पश्चात noun का प्रयोग हो तो इन्हें great में change करते हैं परंतु इनके पश्चात् adjective का प्रयोग होने पर उन्हें very में change करते हैं।
Rule :- 6 R.V. के पश्चात एक conjunction ‘that’ का प्रयोग किया जाता है तथा that के पश्चात R.S. के वाक्य का रूप Assertive Sentence रखते हैं।

Examples :-
Direct – My teacher said, “Alas! Our school team lost the match yesterday.”
Indirect – My teacher exclaimed with sorrow that their school team had lost the match the previous day.
Direct – Ravi said, “Brave! You have done well.”
Indirect – Ravi exclaimed with praise that I had done well.
Direct – Mohan said to me, “Bravo! You get the first rank in your final examination.”
Indirect – Mohan praised me saying that I had got the first rank in my final examination.
Direct – My brother said, “Good Heavens! I have dropped my pen somewhere.”
Indirect – My brother exclaimed with surprise that he had dropped his pen somewhere.
Direct – My sister said, “Hurrah! My old friend has come.”
Indirect – My sister exclaimed with joy that her old friend had come.
Direct – Ravi said, “What a nice pen it is!”
Indirect – Ravi exclaimed with surprise that it was a very nice pen.
Direct – My sister said, “How dangerous the snake is!”
Indirect – My sister exclaimed with surprise that the snake was very dengerous.
Direct – My captain said, “What a captain Dhoni is!”
Indirect – My captain exclaimed with surprise that Dhoni was a great captain.
