A. Answer the following questions in a few words or a couple of sentences each :
Question 1. How old are Margie and Tommy?
Answer – Margie is eleven years old and Tommy is thirteen years old.
Question 2. What did Margie write in her diary?
Answer – In her diary Margie wrote, “Today Tommy found a real book.”
Question 3. Had Margie even seen a book before?
Answer – No, Margie had never seen a book before.
Question 4. What things about the book did she find strange?
Answer – She found it strange that the words and letters in the book stood still. They were not moving as on a computer screen.
Question 5. What do you think a telebook is?
Answer – A telebook is a book which can be displayed on a screen. Boys and girls can read from it just like a book.

Answer – Margie’s school was right next to her bedroom. No, she didn’t have any classmates.

B. Answer the following with reference to the story :
1. “I wouldn’t throw it away.”
(i) Who says these words?
Answer – Tommy says these words.
(ii) What does ‘it’ refer to?
Answer – ‘It’ refers to the old book which Tommy had found.
(iii) What is it being compared with by the speaker?
Answer – Telebook is being compared with real books by the speaker.
2. “Sure they had a teacher, but it wasn’t a regular teacher. It was a man.”
(i) Who does ‘they’ refer to?
Answer – ‘They’re refers to the students of the past.
(ii) What does ‘regular’mean here?
Answer – Here ‘regular’ refers to the mechanical teachers that Tommy and Margie had.
(iii) What is ‘it’ contrasted with?
Answer – ‘It’ is contrasted with a normal teacher of earlier times who was a living human being.

C. Answer the following questions in a short paragraph (about 30 words) :
(i) What kind of teachers did Margie and Tommy have?
Answer – Margie and Tommy had mechanical teachers.
(ii) Why did Margie’s mother sent for the Country Inspector?
Answer – Margie’s mechanical teacher had broken down. Its geography sector was not above the mental level of Margie. So Margie’s mother sent for the Country Inspector to repair the mechanical teacher of Margie.
(iii) What did he do?
Answer – The Country Inspector slowed down the geography sector of the teacher which was geared a little faster for an average ten year old level.
(iv) Why was Margie doing badly in geography? What did the Country Inspector do to help her?
Answer – Margie was doing badly in geography because this sector of the mechanical teacher had been geared a little faster. To help Margie, the Country Inspector slowed down the geography sector of the mechanical teacher according to the level of Margie.
(v) What had once happened to Tommy’s teacher?
Answer – Once the history sector of Tommy’s teacher had blanked out completely.
(vi) Did Margie have regular days and hours for school? if so why?
Answer – Yes, Margie had regular days and hours for school. This was because her mother believed that learning at regular hours helped little girls learn better. Her mechanical teacher was also on at the same time every day except Saturday and Sunday.
(vii) How does Tommy describe the old kind of school?
Answer – Tommy says that the old kind of school was a special building where the students went to study. The students came from the whole neighbourhood to school. They laughed and shouted in the schoolyard.
(viii) How does he describe the old kind of teachers?
Answer – According to Tommy, the old kind of teachers were human beings who taught the students inside a special building. The teachers taught children in groups and gave them homework and asked them questions.

D. Answer each of these questions in two or three paragraphs (100-150 words) :
(i) What are the main features of the mechanical teachers and the schoolrooms that Margie and Tommy have in the story?
Answer – Margie and Tommy have mechanical teachers which are placed in one of the rooms in the house. Margie and Tommy do not go to school building. They don’t have men as their teachers. Margie and Tommy have all their books on the computer screen. They are known as telebooks. They don’t have books printed on paper.
The mechanical teacher is a machine. It has a big screen on which study material is shown and questions are asked. They study history, geography, mathematics etc. There is a slot in which homework and test papers are put.
The mechanical teacher is on at the fixed time every day except Saturday and Sunday. In short, their school is quite different from the past. They don’t require books.
(ii) Why did Margie hate school? Why did she think the old kind of school must have been fun?
Answer – Margie had a room in her house as school. She had a mechanical teacher. Margie hated school because she didn’t find any fun in it. She was taught by a mechanical teacher at a fixed time everyday. She had to sit alone at the appointed time to learn. Everyboy and girl in her neighbourhood studied like that in their own study rooms.
When Margie compared her school with those old schools of the past, she taught those schools must have been fun. Teachers and children from the whole neighbourhood came to school building. They sat together in their classroom and left the school together. They learnt the same things and even helped each other. Therefore, those schools must have been fun.
(iii) Do you agree with Margie that schools today are more fun than the school in the story? Give reasons for your answer.
Answer – Yes, I am agree with Margie that schools today are more fun than the school in the story. In the story, Margie had a school in her house. Her school teacher was mechanical and she had no classmates. Margie could not play with her friends in the school playground and they they couldn’t come home together as compared to what happens in schools today.
The schools today are located in a special building in the neighbourhood. The children go to the school laughing and shouting. They play together, make friends. They are taught by human teachers. They have books printed on papers. But Margie’s school there is no such fun.
