सामान्यतः वर्तमानकालीन एवं भूतकालीन योग्यता ( Ability ) , शक्ति ( Power ) तथा क्षमता ( Capacity ) का बोध कराने के लिए क्रमश : ‘can ‘ तथा ‘ could ‘ का प्रयोग निम्नलिखित वाक्य संरचना के आधार पर होता है –
Afirmative Sentences –
Subject + can / could + V1 + 0.W.
Examples :
मैं विद्यार्थियों को पढ़ा सकता हूं।
I can teach the students.
तुम सुरेश को पीट सकते हो।
You can beat Suresh
वह अंग्रेजी बोल सकता है ।
He can speak English.
तुमलोग इस बाक्से को उठा सकते थे ।
You could lift this box.

Negative Sentences –
Subject + can / could + not + V1 + 0.W.
Examples :
मैं उर्दू नहीं लिख सकता हूँ ।
I can’t write Urdu.
तुम मेरी मदद नहीं कर सकते हो ।
You can’t help me.
वह स्कूटर नहीं चला सकता है ।
He can’t drive a scooter.
हमलोग फ्रांसीसी नहीं पढ़ सकते थे ।
We couldn’t read French.
तुमलोग उसे दस हजार रुपये नहीं दे सकते थे ।
You couldn’t give him ten thousand rupees.
Past Indefinite Tense
Interrogative Sentences –
Can / Could + Sub + V1 + 0.W. + ?
Can / Could + Sub + not + V1 + 0.W. + ?
WH word + can / could + Sub + not + V1 + 0.W. + ?
Examples :
क्या मैं संस्कृत पढ़ा सकता हूँ ?
Can I teach Sanskrit ?
क्या तुम एक रेडियो खरीद सकते हो ?
Can you buy a radio ?
क्या वह गर्मी सह सकता है ?
Can he tolerate the heat ?
क्या हमलोग अंग्रेजी में अनुवाद कर सकते थे ?
Could we translate into English ?
मैं आपके लिए क्या कर सकता हूँ ?
What can I do for you ?
