Answer – Bishmillah Khan, the great shehnai maestro, was born on 21 March, 1916 in a well known family of Bihar. His father Paigamber Bux and his grandfather Rasool Bux Khan were also great shehnai player. As a child Bishmillah Khan used to play gilli danda and regularly went to Bihariji’s temple and sang Bhojpuri ‘Chaita’ there. When he was there, he saw his maternal uncle practising the shehnai and from here he also started his journey of learning shehnai. He started practising in solitude.

Answer – Introduction – Ustad Bishmillah Khanwas a shehnai master of great national and international fame. He was a great musician. He created many new ragas. He was given many awards and he was also honoured with the ‘Bharat Ratan’.

Great Musician – Bishmillah Khan has been one of the most eminent musician of India. He honoured rich, cultural heritage of Indian music. Many awards like the Padama Shri, the Padma Bhushan and the Padam Vibhushan were conferred on him.

A great patriot – Bishmillah Khan was a great patriot as once he declined the offer of his student to settle down to USA.

Simple man – Bishmillah Khan was a simple man. He was not allured by the glamour of the film world. He had visited several countries but never thought to settle there.

Conclusion – Bishmillah Khan was a great shehnai player. His contribution to shehnai always be remembered.

Question 3. What do you know about Bishmillah Khan’s ‘awards and recognition’?

Answer – Bishmillah Khan was awarded the Padma Shri, the Padam Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan Awards. Besides it, in 2001, he was awarded India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna. In addition to this, it was Bishmillah Khan who took the shehnai to the classical stage. On 15 August 1947, he greeted the nation with his shehnai. He gave performances at Afghanistan, USA, Montreal, Osaka etc. So he became well known internationally.

Answer – Yes, I agree that Bishmillah Khan loved India, Banaras and Dumraon. For him Banaras and Dumraon remained the most wonderful towns in the world. A student of him wanted him to head a shehnai school in the USA with a promise that he would recreate the atmosphere of Banaras there. Bishmillah Khan refused his offer asking him if he could fetch the Ganga there. When he was in foreign country, he always thought to see Hindustan, while in Mumbai, he thought of Banaras and the Ganga, and while in Banaras, he missed the unique Mattha of Dumraon.

Question 5. How was Bishmillah Khan associated with films, and why did he give up films?

Answer – When film director Vijay Bhatt heard Bishmillah Khan’s play at a festival, he became so much impressed with it that he named a film after the instrument called ‘Gunj Uthi Shehnai’. One of the Bishmillah Khan’s compositions ‘Dil Ka Khilona Hain Toot Gaya… ” became nationwide popular. Despite this huge success, Bishmillah Khan worked only in two films. His other film was Vikram Srinivas’s Kannada film ‘Sanadhi Apanna’. Bishmillah Khan could not come to terms with artificiality and glamour of the film world. So for this reason he gave up films.
